Daniel Kinahan: why we’re all part of the same hypocrisy
A seminal moment in Coppola’s classic sequel, The Godfather II, is the scene where a freshly installed Godfather of the Corleone Gamily, Michael Corleone, is confronted by a corrupt senator at his sister Connie’s lavish wedding.
The senator is all smiles in front of Michael Corleone’s family when he arrives for a sit down in the latter’s office. Soon after, the two of them getting down to business, the senator’s mask of propriety and respect is removed as he proceeds to lay into the Godfather with a few, from his perspective, home truths.
SENATOR GEARY : I’m going to squeeze you, Corleone, because I don’t like you; I don’t like the kind of man you are. I despise your masquerade, and the dishonest way you pose yourself and your fucking family.
MICHAEL: We’re all part of the same hypocrisy, Senator. But never think it applies to my family.
