Further reflections on the martyrdom of Yahya Sinwar

Those throughout history who have made it their business to kill revolutionary and resistance leaders never learn. They believe that such acts strengthens them while enfeebling the revoution and/or resistance movement they are committed to defeating.

This is their undoing.

The image of the body of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar amid the rubble of Gaza in 2024 was instantly redolent of that of Che Guevara, photographed lying dead on a bench after he’d been executed by the Bolivians with the acquiescence of the CIA in 1967. Sinwar, like Che, could have been in no doubt that he was bound to die. And as with Che also, in killing the man his executioners gave birth to the legend.

Sinwar was neither saint nor sinner, he was product — the product of Zionist/Israeli oppression and terror. Born in the refugee camp of Khan Younis, Gaza, in 1962, his was life all but mapped out. Student activism, religiosity, an adamantine commitment to the Palestinian struggle not just for freedom but for the dignity of being recognized as human, it was a life of struggle that involved him being arrested, beaten, tortured and imprisoned for 23 long years.
