I applaud your very intelligent and reasoned comment on the article.
You say the 'USSR failed'. By what metric? Yes, it no longer is extant, but given the poor soil upon which it was built the wonder is that it lasted the 70 years that it did.
Socialism/Communism is not established in laboratory conditions. It needs must engage in a merciless struggle against really existing material conditions.
