Who will save us from America? A short discourse on the nightmare of US exceptionalism

From Oliver Stone’s controversial 1995 dark comedy, Natural Born Killers, the above unforgettable lines, when rewritten with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s names substituted for those of Mickey and Mallory Knox, serve the salutary purpose of disabusing us of the myths of US liberal exceptionalism, while at the same time bringing us face to face with its grim reality.

It is a grim reality that has never been more important with the ongoing conflict raging in Ukraine and Israel’s genocidal slaughter in Gaza at a time when US has never been more polarised between its red and blue states as Trump threatens to make a dramatic return to the Oval Office in 2024; criminal charges and investigations notwithstanding.
